The first annual Pecan Bake-off showcased 25 entries on Saturday. “We are thrilled with the number of entries for a first time event” said Brenda Bishop, Extension Home Economist. Judged the Best of Show winner, 10-year-old Ashee Bradley credited her secret ingredient handed down from her great-great-grandmother from Mississippi. The recipe has brought top place in the past three Quay County fairs, she said. “The recipe has Tucumcari pecans,” said Bradley, who is the daughter of Ginger and Lee Bradley. Twelve people brought entries. The panel of judges worked very hard to pick the winners, Bishop said. The 2007 October forecast is 6 million pounds more than the 2005 crop, the previous 'on' year in the alternate bearing cycle of pecan trees. The October forecast has New Mexico ranked 2nd in the nation and would be a new state record.
