In the local county races, one incumbent faces a challenger after a tally of Tuesday's filings for candidancy with the Quay County Clerk's office.
Democrat Robert Lopez, who represents Distirct 1, is being challenged by Doug Powers, a Democrat who is also director of the city of Tucumcari Community Development Department.
Lopez was appointed in 2005 by Gov. Bill Richardson to fill out the term of the late Grace Madrid, and was required by law in 2006 to seek election for the last two years of his term. Lopez won in a race against Jimmy Sandoval and Doyle Frasier.
County commissioner Bill Curry, District 2, faces no challengers.
In other county races:
l Ellen White, Quay County Clerk, faces an uncontested race.
l Donna Dominguez, chief deputy treasurer, is seeking the office of Quay County Treasurer. The term of Quay County Treasurer Nadine Angel expires this year.
In the 10th Judicial District:
l District Attorney Ronald W. Reeves will run unopposed.
l District Court Judge Donald Schutte filed and Albert Mitchell, Jr. filed to seek election to district judge.
Schutte was appointed last year to district judge and was sworn in Sept. 27, 2007 to replace Judge Ricky Purcell, who retired.
In the race for a seat in the U.S. Congress, the field is crowded with six Democrats and two Republicans filing to run.
