After testing their skills on road trips, a junior little league and a little league team will play Saturday for the home fans in Tucumcari.
* The Rockies will play a double header against the Portales Astros at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Jennings Field.
A part of little league baseball, junior little league is for youths aged 13 - 15.
Coach Joey Martinez said that the Rockies have been playing together for about three weeks.
“We just put some kids together, and had our first practice two days before the season started,” Martinez said.
With a 4-3 record, this weekend could move the team into second place, Martinez said.
Last weekend, in a double header against the Clovis American Dodgers at Clovis, Rockies’ pitcher Jordan Maestas threw 89 pitches for 10 strikeouts.
The Rockies lost the first game by one, but came back to take the second 10 - 5.
In Saturday’s match up, pitcher George Montanyo will lead off in the first game, and Maestas will pitch the second.
* The little league team the Dodgers will play the Tucumcari Padres at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Jennings Field.
The Dodgers, 11 to 12 years old, have a 10-1 record, said Martinez who also coaches the Dodgers.
The Dogers are one game away from the championships. A win this weekend would put them in the all-star playoffs, Martinez said.
