The Tucumcari Fire Department is working on trying to contain a fire today along Route 66 which spread to U.S. 54, according to fire officials.

Firefighters closed U.S. 54 at about 4:30 p.m. The road reopened at around 9:30 p.m.

The grass fire along the 2300 block of Route 66 caused a 30 minute power outage in Tucumcari, said Xcel Energy spokesman Wes Reeves.

“A breaker was damaged by the fire which resulted in the outage,” Reeves said.

Reeves said the outage began at 3:38 p.m., with power being restored by 4:15 p.m., to all customers.

Reeves said at this time Xcel does not know if the power lines caused the fire.

Several eye witnesses at a retail store located on the 2300 block Route 66 reported hearing a loud pop and then the field was on fire.

We will update information as we receive it.
