Turnovers prove to be too much for the Tucumcari Rattlers to overcome, losing 30-15 on the road Friday to the Farwell Steers.
“We have to move on and concentrate on next week,” said senior George Montano.
The momentum shifted in the Steers’ favor at the end of the first half. The Steers defense stopped the Rattlers on a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line.
“That was a big boost for them and a downer for us,” said Rattlers assistant coach John Span.
Rattlers misfortune continued as they turned the ball over twice in the third quarter. First an intercepted pass from junior Luke Smith and then a fumble by junior Zach Hurd.
The Steers capitalized on both turnovers with a 35-yard field goal and 24-yard run by junior Kolten Morris.
Tucumcari’s first touchdowns was in the second quarter, when Smith stripped the ball from freshman Curtis Langford on a punt return, which led to a 12 yard option pass from senior George Montano to sophomore Mark Preciado.
The second score was in the final period the Rattlers drove 88 yards, capped off by Montano’s 6-yard run .
“There defense was playing tough the whole way through,” Montano said.
“They were rotating their starters out one at a time.”
The Steers controlled the clock, limiting the Rattlers to five possession in the second half.
“This is something we just need to bounce back from,” Span said. “We played a great ball club. We need to get back out there and work harder.”
Rattlers play next at 7 p.m., at Estancia.
