The visting Tucumcari Rattlers scorched Clayton for 587 yards of offense Friday night and beat Yellowjackets 49-7 in the district opener for both teams.
The Rattlers finished with 481 yards rushing and 106 yards passing.
Zach Hurd led the Rattlers with 13 carries for 208 yards and three touchdowns. George Montano added 125 yards on nine carries.
Luke Smith completed 3 of 6 passes for two touchdowns — both to Montano.
The Rattlers had a safety and limited the Yellowjackets (1-6) to 194 yards and a touchdown, a 2-yard quarterback sneak by Ben Chapa in the first quarter.
The Rattlers scored three times runs of 2 yards by Leon Vigil and 15 yards by Hurd, and a 48-yard pass from Smith to Montano — to break the game open.
The Rattlers turned the ball over twice in the first half.
However, Clayton failed to capitalize and the drives ended with a missed field goal and a punt.
“You have to get over the turnovers quick,” Montano said. “You put them out of your mind, get back out on the field and play.”
