The Tucumcari Lady Rattler softball team will play the Lady Demons today in the first round of the 3A state softball tournament at Dexter.
The 16th-seed Lady Rattlers are the last team to make the tournament, “but if we play with confidence we can compete with the first place Lady Demons,” said Nina Hatfield-Montano, senior left fielder.
Hatfield-Montano said she was overcome with joy and excitement on Sunday when she learned the team had made the tournament.
Four days earlier, Hatfield-Montano was brought to tears after losing to the Estancia Lady Bears 23-21 in what she thought then was her last game for the Lady Rattlers.
“I’m so thankful to have a chance to be on the field again,” Hatfield-Montano said.
Hatfield-Montano said she and the Lady Rattlers will need to be focused against the top-ranked Lady Demons.
“We know they are number one,” Hatfield-Montano said. “I trust in my teammates and know if we play with heart we may just pull off an upset,”
The Lady Rattlers deserved to be in the tournament, they deserved a chance and they got it, said Lawrence Sena, Lady Rattlers head coach.
Sena said the Lady Rattlers are focusing on proving they deserve this shot and can compete with the best.
Game time: 10 a.m., today at Dexter.
