The Tucumcari Rattlers were upset by the visiting Logan Longhorns during Homecoming Friday night at the Snake Pit.
Logan beat Tucumcari 61-56.
“We had our opportunities, but they just did a better job of finishing tonight,” said Rattlers head coach John Span.
The Rattlers (8-6) saw their 10-point lead began to diminish at the close of the first half as the Longhorns (14-3) closed the gap to three points.
“We could not take care of the ball,” Span said. “We had a 10-point lead fade away just before the half.”
Throughout the third period the Longhorns would continue to chip away at the lead, applying pressure to the Rattlers guard
“We wanted to limit and take away his ability to pass freely to the post Luke Smith,” Longhorns head coach Arnold Peralez said.
The pressure from the Longhorns led to rushed play by the Rattlers resulting in turnovers from bad passes and lose ball control.
“We missed some easy shots and they were able to make theirs when it counted,” Span said.
The Rattlers continued to fight back in the final period and with 33 second left they closed the gap 59-56.
Rylan Calbert’s two free throws sealed the victory for the Longhorns.
